We are very fortunate at Mount Pleasant Road Primary School and Kindergarten to have an amazing garden and sustainability program.
We have been undertaking the Resource Smart Schools program at our school. Resource Smart Schools is an award-winning Victorian Government program that assists schools to embed sustainability in everything they do. Managed by Sustainability Victoria, Resource Smart Schools provide practical support to reduce resource use and make cost savings, integrate sustainability into the curriculum and share our learning with the local community.
By undertaking this program, we are working towards minimising our carbon footprint and creating a healthier and more sustainable future for everyone. For more information about Resource Smart please follow this link https://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/School/About-ResourceSmart-Schools
Learning about sustainability and the environment is facilitated through the garden by using tank water and compost from lunch scraps to sustain and nurture the plants. Students also have the opportunity to harvest the plants to create many culinary delights in the cafe studio to share with their classmates. Our garden relies heavily on parent involvement and has recently been renovated with help from the school community.
We are grateful to Karen Taubert for her support in sourcing donations of materials and caring for the garden over the past years. The garden is regularly visited by students from across the school and Kindergarten.
